The following message is from Neal Litvack, Chief Development Officer:
In response to the International Federation’s decision today to launch a $6.4 million preliminary emergency appeal for Chile, the American Red Cross will now accept contributions designated for victims of the February 27 earthquake which severely damaged that South American nation.
We will accept designated donations sent by texting the word “CHILE” to 90999 for a $10 gift; online gifts to redcross.org; and toll-free calls to 1-800-RED CROSS. People can also call 1-800-257-7575 to make a donation in Spanish. In doing this, we are also responding to requests from our donors, who have told us they want to support the disaster-caused needs in Chile.
We waited to accept Chile-designated donations until more was known about the need and there was a specific request for help for the earthquake survivors. Now that the needs are better known and the Federation has made an appeal to assist the Chilean Red Cross, the American Red Cross is accepting Chile-designed donations.
As has been our longstanding practice, we honor donor intent and we welcome donors who wish to designate their gifts or donors who wish to provide unrestricted funds.
Thank you for your support of the operation in Chile, as well as our ongoing work in Haiti, which will continue for the long term. We will communicate additional guidance on fundraising and chapter reporting as needed. |
